I chose to go with the good drive pattern and on my initial gear break-in/test drive, I had a slight gear whine while coasting and deceleration from about 45-40 mph. Either too deep on the coast side (with a good drive pattern) or too shallow on the drive side (with a good coast pattern). Leaf spring insulators are placed between the leaves to protect the springs from metal on metal contact, reduce vibration, and prevent squeaking. so the spring perches would still be fully torqued onto the leaf springs if I left all of the insulator pads out. Even with both insulator pads removed (upper and lower) the depth of the leaf springs is more the the depth of the spring perch. but could not get a good gear mesh pattern. I have multi-leaf perches with multi-leaf springs and 1/2' U-bolts. Arguably the best indicator that you have spring insulators that are worn out and need to be replaced is if the vehicle bottoms out while negotiating obstacles in the road. 001(both carrier/ring gear runout and backlash variations). Daily driving I do not notice a sound difference. Regular driving there is no noise difference at all. Going over a decent sized bump in the road does seem to cause more noise than before the traction bars and removing the pads but it is not horrific. I did not re-install the rubber isolators and installed the traction bars. Out comes the grinder and with a little massaging to the insides of the perches the leaf springs are now sitting correctly in the perch. This past spring I installed lakewood traction bars, during install I noticed that the multileafs did not sit flat in the perches. I had a spring shop install three leaf springs a couple years ago which they did not change the perches to multi leaf perches. I have a 70 nova which had the original mono leaf springs when I purchased it.
